PCOC vs PCL - What's The Difference?

If you're new to boating in Canada, you may see the terms PCOC and PCL used interchangeably, but they are actually two different things.

PCOC (Pleasure Craft Operator Card)
Often called a boating license, the PCOC is proof that you have completed an approved boating safety course. Anyone operating a powered recreational boat in Canada must carry proof of competency.

PCL (Pleasure Craft Licence)
A PCL is not your boating license. It is the registration number assigned to your boat, which must be displayed on the hull of the vessel.

Transport Canada Update

Transport Canada has introduced updates to Pleasure Craft Licenses. All new, transferred, and renewed PCLs are now valid for 5 years and must be renewed to keep your vessel information up to date.
